Kingsman: The Secret Service

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Matthew Vaughn is so good at making fun action movies.  Sure the violence and language tend to push these to being rated R but it's totally worth it.  This is a movie made for teenage boys but done well enough that grown ups can appreciate the guilty pleasure that it is.  Samuel L Jackson is at his over the top best.  Colin Firth is surprisingly badass.  The side characters are entertaining as hell.  It was just a whole lot of over the top fun.

I would definitely recommend people checking this out.  It was a lot of fun and almost Tarantinoesque with its witty banter and crazy violence.

Fifty Shades Of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever. Fifty Shades of Grey  follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.

Does it matter what I say about this movie?   If you read the book - you are going to see the movie.  It's like the Twilight series but with sex.  And if you liked the book, your expectations won't ne met because there really was no way for them to do so.  My opinion is that the actress was much better than I expected and pretty much carried everything.  The guy pretty much sucked and ruined the chemistry between the two.  I thought that they did justice to that kind of "lifestyle" as tastefully as possible but in doing so made the movie pretty much not sexy across the board.

Again - my recommendation doesn't really matter.  I thought that the movie was eh.

Black Or White

Black or White is the story of a grandfather (Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When her paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody with the help of her brother (Anthony Mackie), the little girl is torn between two families who love her deeply. With the best intentions at heart, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

This is one of those movies where you have pretty much seen it by watching the trailer.  You know exactly how it's going to play out.  That being said, movies like these are made or broken based on the formula performances.  Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer both do a good job of pulling the right heartstrings and making you care enough to keep watching even though you know how it will play out.

I wouldn't really recommend anyone rushing out to see this.  It's not necessarily a bad watch but it is just kind of there.

The Loft

Karl Urban and James Marsden star in the tense psychological thriller The Loft, the story of five guys who conspire to secretly share a penthouse loft in the city--a place where they can indulge in their deepest fantasies. But the fantasy becomes a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved. Paranoia seizes them as everyone begins to suspect one another. Friendships are tested, loyalties are questioned and marriages crumble as the group is consumed by fear, suspicion and murder in this relentless thriller.

This movie was a somewhat decent whodunnit.  The plot description pretty much tells you the whole story.  The thing is that any level of really caring is minimal at best.  The movie is ultimately pointless and one would wonder why it was made at all.

I wouldn't really recommend anyone bothering with this.  It's not necessarily that it's bad.  It's just kind of there.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water

SpongeBob SquarePants, the world's favorite sea dwelling invertebrate, comes ashore to our world for his most super-heroic adventure yet. Based on the series "SpongeBob Squarepants," created by Stephen Hillenburg.

I'm not really sure that it is necessary for me to even bother reviewing this movie.  Do you or your kids like the SpongeBob cartoon?  If yes - then you will enjoy the movie because it's basically just three episodes of the cartoon put together.  I've always liked the show and I enjoyed the movie.  If you don't or have never watched - I would have no idea why you would be watching this movie.

I would definitely recommend fans of the show checking this out.  It's not too painful for adults going with their kids and honestly SpongeBob was always one of those things that the adults kind of enjoyed as much as the kids anyway.

Jupiter Ascending

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in Jupiter Ascending, an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski. Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Let's start with the good about this movie.  Visually, it was amazing.  The action scenes looked great.  There was also pretty good chemistry between Kunis and Tatum.  Unfortunately, that was really it.  The story was very forced and rushed even though it felt like a long ass movie.  The rest of the acting was so grossly over the top as was all costume and set design.  I know it's a sci-fi movie but it was still too much.  And then there is the worst part of it.  This movie had the most annoying score throughout.  It was way too dominating and was not reflective of the scenes at all.  It made it where walking down the street sounded like it was the grand finale.

I wouldn't recommend people wasting their time checking this out.  As great as the action looks there really is nothing else of substance in this at aall.

Wild Card

Nick Wild (Jason Statham) is a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal professional skills and a personal gambling problem. When a friend is beaten by a sadistic thug, Nick strikes back, only to find out the thug is the son of a powerful mob boss. Suddenly Nick is plunged into the criminal underworld, chased by enforcers and wanted by the mob. Having raised the stakes, Nick has one last play to change his fortunes…and this time, it’s all or nothing.

This was pretty much just another Jason Statham movie.  Although the balance between brooding silently and crazy fighting definitely swayed more towards brooding.  The fight scenes were very spaced out but we're really badass with the way they were filmed.

I wouldn't really recommend this bad boy to people unless they are Statham fans.  Even then it's not as action filled as his others.

Seventh Son

In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes). Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom.

I feel like every year a movie gets released in early February where it is really just an excuse for fantasy creature special effects.  This is definitely that movie.  It kind of has a story but they pretty much rushed through it to just try to get as many creatures crammed in there.  It reminded me a lot of James The Giant Slayer or the Clash Of The Titans movies.  Lots of flash but not much substance.

I wouldn't really recommend anyone rushing to see this movie.  Great effects but not much else.
